How to export/publish a video project so you can upload it
Settings you need to know:

These settings will create a video file that is:
- small enough to easily upload to Mash Pit Comedy
- of sufficient quality so the clips can be mashed by others and be broadcast on TV.
Step by Step iMovie export settings and instructions – for newbies:
Mash Pit Comedy process for exporting a video from a Widescreen (16:9) or Non-widescreen (4:3) iMovie project.
Please note these instructions may differ slightly depending on what version of iMovie you are using.
Video Export Settings
- Go to File/Export (iMovie v4), or File/Share (iMovie HD v4) or Share/Export using Quicktime (iMovie09).
- Within the dialogue box that appears, make sure you are selected on the Quicktime Tab. Upper right corner. If you are using iMovie09 skip ahead to step 4.
- Go to the Compress Movie For: pop-up list. Select Expert Settings. Then click Share.
- A new dialogue box will appear called Save exported file as... Click within the box, to the right of the words Save as, give your movie a name.
- Click within the pop-up box next to the words Where on the File Browser and direct where you want your video to be exported/saved to on your computer.
- Click within the pop-up box next to the words Export; select the option Movie to Quicktime Movie.
- Click within the pop-up box next to the words Use; select Use Default settings.
- Click on the Options button. A new window will appear called Movie settings.
- Make sure the box next to the words Video is selected. Click on the Settings button.
- A new window will appear called Standard Video Settings.
- In the Compression Type pop-up list select H.264.
- In the Frame rate drop down list select 25 fps.
- For Key Frames select Automatic.
- If the frame reordering option is selected, unselect it by clicking on the box to the left of the words Frame Reordering.
- The quality slider should be set to high.
- Encoding select Best Quality Multi Pass.
- Data Rate, select Restrict to and type 2000 in the box to the right to restrict the data rate to 2000 kbit/s.
- In the drop down box next to the words Optimized for, select Download.
- Double check the above settings then click OK. The window will close and you will be back at the window named Movie settings.
- Now click on the Size button.
- A new window will appear called Export Size Settings.
- Click within the pop-up box next to the words Dimensions, select Custom.
- In the boxes to left of the Dimensions drop down box, you now need to type the aspect ratio dimensions that best suit your project.
If you are exporting Widescreen (16:9) type 1024 in the 1st box, and type 576 in the 2nd box. This will be the frame size of your exported video, ie 1024x576 pixels.
If you are exporting Non-widescreen screen (4:3) type 720 in the 1st box, and type 576 in the 2nd box. This will be the frame size of your video, ie 720 x 576.
- Make sure the Preserve aspect ratio using Letter Box box is unselected.
- Select De-interlace Video.
- Then click OK.
Audio Export Settings
- Now for the audio settings. Under audio, click on Settings.
- Click on the pop-up box next to the word Format. Select AAC.
- Click on the pop-up box next to the word Channels. Select Stereo (L R).
- Click on the pop-up box next to the word Rate. Select 44.100 KHZ.
- Click on the pop-up box next to the word Quality. Select Best.
- Click on the pop-up box next to the words Encoding Strategy. Select Variable Bit Rate.
- Click on the pop-up box next to the words Estimated Bit Rate. Select 192.
- Click OK. The sound settings box will close.
- Double check your settings as per the above, within the Movie Settings dialogue box.
- If Prepare for Internet Streaming is selected, unselect it, then click OK.
- Click Save, your movie will now be exported to the folder you selected on your computer.
- Congratulations. You’re now ready to upload your comedy to Mash Pit Comedy!
